Why I read poetry to hospice patients, by Bob Jacob

I've lost track of the number of times that people say to me, "how can you read to the dying?" I point out that many times the eyes that are looking at me are anxious and frightened, they know why they are here. As I begin to read they stare intently. After the first poem when the words begin to reach them, their gaze begins to soften as though their life experiences and the words meet, and sometimes a loving smile arrives. They ask for more or reach out and hold my hand and simply say, "God bless you." That is why I read poetry at hospice.
